Discover The Unspoken

Each individual is one of a kind, we all perceive the world differently.

Personality traits are essential for recognising how we
lead, influence, communicate, collaborate and manage stress.

This is an interactive light installation that aims to hold up a mirror towards society, to challenge the natural inductive bias cognitively present in human brains, and progressively tackle perceptual bias by reinforcing the importance of self-consciousness and mindfulness.

Discover The Unspoken | Manifesto of Introversion

Topic of personality get thrown around in conversation today rather flippantly. Due to this tendency of people making conclusions about others’ actions and performance solely on what they see and perceive, regardless of the underlying facts of the situation, introverts in particular have been so tragically misunderstood that they have been consistently left out from large social settings, leadership positions and countless other opportunities.

This artwork aims to hold up a mirror towards society, to challenge the natural inductive bias cognitively present in human brains, and progressively tackle perceptual bias by reinforcing the importance of self-consciousness and mindfulness.

“Introversion” & “Extroversion” define a universal dimension of human personality — an axis along which people tend toward a characteristic position that forms their most comfortable way of relating to the world.

“Discover The Unspoken”

This interactive light installation conceptualises and represents the journey of introverts and their existential search in this noisy world.

“Discover The Unspoken” is inspired by a hands-on museum exhibit, as one where ‘clear educational objectives are to encourage individuals to understand real objects or real phenomena through physical exploration which involves choice and initiative’ (Hashim, M., & Hasslily, N. , 2013).

Through abstract imagery and ambiguous use of words, the work is open for interpretation and further analysis of the underlying meaning and intention of the designer. It puts a big emphasis on questioning the importance of an individual’s self-consciousness, how present one is with themselves, and their ability to observe their thoughts in a lesser to non-judgmental way.

The words written on the board is a mixture of personal manifesto, and some first hand direct quotation of people and some gathered from the internet.

Manifesto for introversion

Physical Light Installation – Ludic design

The concept of using UV 395nm blacklight to reveal secret messages of “what introverts have to say” was proven to be a compelling and intriguing design approach that challenges societal stereotypes, while emphasising that the messages don’t necessarily apply to every introvert as we are all unique beings.

A symbolic self discovery through exploration, challenging past ideology, giving a tangible element to something intangible.

3-in-1 multi-sensory immersion. Interactive storytelling through Art & Physics

Design Rationale

Cat resembles Introverts, the use of cat eyes in this artwork symbolises that Introverts observe more than talking (visual > verbal)

UV invisible spray paint was used because whatever was written will only revealed when UV blacklight shines on it – in a way means giving enough spotlights (attention) to introverts as it takes a little more efforts and time to discover and get to know introverts.

The immersive experience features the title song, “Fine on the Outside”, the theme song of the 2014 Studio Ghibli film [When Marnie Was There] as an ambience bgm, which is a song that talks about a life journey as an introvert.

HOW TO INTERACT WITH IT?

1. Place the UV blacklight, facing towards the participant avoiding eye level, place around the height of 80-100cm from the ground and 30cm away from the artwork.
2. Allow the participant to stand from a 30cm distance from the artwork, hold the mirror, switch on the UV light and inform people not to stare into it directly
3. Freedom of participants to play with the mirror, move closer if participant has relatively weak eyesight.
4. Main prototype is the acrylic glass, followed by the tiny pieces of letter wooden blocks and the black fabric.

EXISTENTIAL SEARCH IN THIS NOISY WORLD…💭🌍

An approach of defining the indefinable: personality traits.

The beauty of this work is its ability to evoke interpretation, ideas beyond the canvases.

Never apologise for being yourself, the real you.
